Forwarding an important message:

The federal Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE) has proposed a petition to protect public lands in Anderson, Campbell, Morgan and Scott counties. This petition, referred to as the North Cumberland Lands Unsuitable for Mining Petition (LUMP), would prohibit surface mining within the area designated. This would protect many of Tennessee’s mountaintops, and could help keep some of the state’s world-class, biodiverse ecosystems intact.

Now OSMRE needs to hear from you:

(letter writing tool provided by Statewide Organizing for Community eMpowerment)

This week ORMRE is collecting public comments on the scoping phase of the petition. We need the strong voices of citizens like you to protect the lands, water, and people of Tennessee. Make comments by attending one of the scoping hearings OSMRE is hosting or click here to submit a comment online. The remaining scoping meeting will be held at:
March 15, 2011 - Oak Ridge High School at 6:30 p.m. (EDT)

Written comments must be received by 5:00 p.m. (EDT), April 14, 2011. Click here to submit your comment today and show support of the Cumberland Area Lands Unsuitable for Mining Petition.

Contact Ann League with Statewide Organizing for Community eMpowerment for more information of these hearings and comment periods: ann@socm.org or (865) 249-7488.

Just a few minutes of your time can make all the difference in protecting Tennessee from future mountaintop removal mining operations.

Thanks, as always, for taking action.

What about members from GINI sending a letter.  Since Apr 14 is before the monthly meeting, we could collect signatures at Rev. Bingham's talk?  I'd help with this if you want to do it.
