Event Description

In honor of Earth Month, East Tennessee State University’s Department of Sustainability will screen three environmental films in April.

The films will be shown on the three consecutive Mondays, April 2, April 9 and April 16, at 7 p.m. in the Brown Hall auditorium. Door prizes will be awarded and refreshments will be served at these free public events.

“Bag It,” screening on April 2, follows Jeb Berrier as he undertakes a global tour to investigate the complexities of the “plastic world,” beginning with a look at plastic bags and questioning plastic’s effects on oceans, the environment, and human bodies.

“Taken for a Ride,” the April 9 film, details an auto and oil industries campaign, led by General Motors, which included buying and dismantling streetcar lines in order to increase private automobile ownership. The film provides viewers with a basis for discussion about corporate power, citizen protest and the environmental implications of transportation.

“Sun Come Up,” the April 16 entry, was nominated for an Oscar. It strives to show the human face of climate change by following the relocation of the Carteret Islanders, a community living on a remote island chain in the South Pacific. As climate change and rising seas threaten their survival, they leave their ancestral home and arrive in war-torn Bougainville, 50 miles across the open ocean.

The series is funded by the ETSU Student Government Association.
