Event Description

A Prayer Vigil for Black Lives Taken

SATURDAY, JUNE 6, 11:00am

 ABINGDON FARMERS MARKET

The Appalachian Peace Education Center will host a vigil to mourn the lives of African Americans lost due to racial violence, to name the racial realities in our country, to pray for repentance and healing of past and ongoing injustices, and to call attendees to strive for an end to racism.

This event will be held at the Abingdon Farmers Market beginning at 11am. The prayer vigil will include 8 minutes and 46 seconds of silence to remember George Floyd’s suffering. After the 30-minute vigil, we will walk in silence, maintaining social distancing, down Main Street to Pecan Street where town church bells will toll for the loss of life.

In respect for the health and safety of all participants, please wear a face mask that covers the nose and mouth and keep a physical distance of at least six feet or more from other participants. Those desiring are welcome to bring a sign that expresses their feelings about the legacy of violence against African Americans in our country.

Please spread the word about this vigil to your friends, Facebook and otherwise.
