I sort of understand an eye for an eye mentality. I sort of understand why some feel the need to invoke revenge. I can't imagine what it must be like to face the man responsible for the disappearance or possibly the torture and death of friends and family members. But at moments like this I understand why I could never be a soldier or a policeman. I can still find compassion for the perpetrator. Perhaps just enough compassion to keep me from becoming him. I think people like this should be locked up for the rest of their lives in order to protect others. But when it comes to taking another life, there is something inside me that makes me terribly sick, whether it be an animal or another human being. I cannot watch it or be a part of it in any way. I cannot celebrate the death of another human being. For me that crosses a line I feel should not be crossed.

I do not believe peace is achieved with more violence!

I am surprised at the reaction from some since I shared this feeling earlier today. I do believe the idea "thou shalt not kill" is meant to teach us respect for human life. I believe the only time it can be ignored is when it is done to save a life. Killing one person will not bring back another person from death. Revenge is not something I want to embrace, ever! It is a test to see if I am able to remain human and humane in the face of extreme challenge!

With you all the way! Most of what we refer to as "justice" is thinly disguised social vengence. Maybe someday?

I couldn't have said it better...er, I mean, half so well.  I applaud your concern and compassion for all living things.  H.B.
