A BIG thank you to all who came and supported the May 20th Johnson City Interfaith steam clean up. Together we hauled out 40 full bags of litter from an estimated 3 miles of city creek. If each bag weighed 20 pounds, give or take, that was 800 lbs of trash!
The most unusual finds were an automobile alternator and a children's toy stethoscope. The most ubiquitous item clogging our waterways was the plastic bag. They were everywhere! More reason to use your own cloth bags next time you shop :-)
Through the tiring and dirty experience of cleaning up our community we had some great fellowship. I met some new faces. It is always so gratifying to see that the core of folks who care about caring for Creation is larger than we could ever conceive.
Churches and communities represented: First Pres Jonesborough, Munsey Methodist, St. John's Episcopal, Johnson City Friends Meeting, Covenant Presbyterian, First Pres Elizabethton, Holston UU, United Religions Initiative, Occupy Johnson City.
Our supporters: Keep Johnson City Beautiful and Johnson City Public Works (bottled water, trash bags, grabbers, safety vests, logistics), Johnson City Stormwater team (maps, logistics), Boones Watershed Partnership (waders, bags, gloves), Carver Recreation Center.
