A January 2017 survey by the American Psychological Association found that 57% of Americans report that the “current political climate is a very or somewhat significant source of stress.” The availability of ubiquitous, round-the-clock news and social media can fuel intense emotional reactions around socio-political issues, concerns about healthcare and climate change, and news reports of conflicts occurring locally, nationally and internationally. Added stress may result from relationships with family members, friends and co-workers who may have a very different view of both the causes and solutions to the problems that confront us.
The Peacemaking Committee is offering an afternoon workshop to assist participants in coping with living in a stressful socio-political climate. The workshop will be led by professionals in the field of mental health.
Workshop Leaders: Jennifer Gardner, LCSW, Mina McVeigh, LCSW, Myra Elder, Ph.D., and members of the Peacemaking Committee
Topics include:
Overview of experiences and distress created by our social, political, national and world stressors.
Small group discussion
Historical perspective
Coping Strategies
Community involvement
Participation in politics
